As we progress closer to hunting season, I just wanted to take the time to talk about safety during practice on our ranges and safety in the field. In 2025, the Michigan DNR Law Enforcement Division reported 3 official hunting-related incidents, which included one fatality. While that number seems low, that is only firearm-related.

Unfortunately, none of us are getting any younger. There are more hunters injured by not preparing themselves for strenuous situations and pushing themselves too hard, either pulling muscles or, worse of all, having a heart attack!

The short walk to your stand becomes a lot harder with all your gear on and in colder temperatures. Now imagine having to drag out your harvest.

That’s what gets you. Start preparing yourself now by taking walks around your neighborhood, using the stairs instead of the elevator, changing your eating habits, and drinking more water.

Finally, let someone know where you will be hunting by providing a map or GPS coordinates, your phone number, when you will be leaving and when you
will return, vehicle description, and license plate number.
