Oakland County Sportsman July 2025
June 20, 2025
Greetings fellow club members.
My name is Dave Budnick. I’m pleased to introduce myself as the new Oakland County Sportsmen’s Club (OCSC) representative to Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC).
MUCC is the largest statewide conservation organization in the nation and OCSC is one of its largest member clubs. Our access to MUCC is an excellent opportunity to be heard regarding important conservation and second amendment issues.
OCSC has a long history of involvement with MUCC. I’m grateful to Chris Finazzo for speaking with me. I’m especially grateful to Elden Montross for spending time with me regarding the roles and responsibilities of the MUCC rep. Both have served in this position in the past; Elden for decades.
A little about me . . .
I’ve been a member at OCSC for 18 years. I’m married with two grown children and two grandchildren. I live in Orion Township. I’m an active parishioner at Christ the Redeemer Catholic church. I retired recently from Flagstar Bank where I worked in Information Technology. In addition to a love for all things outdoors, I also enjoy photography.
Now that I’m retired, I have an interest in serving more. And serving more at OCSC is, for me, a no-brainer. I love our club. I noted over these past months that the MUCC position has been open so I started talking to folks about it and how I could get involved. The process concluded at the March Board meeting where my nomination was voted on and passed. Thank you for that.
The MUCC annual convention occurred March 8 and 9, 2025, in Gaylord. Club members Carl Biddinger and Greg Sayyae were in attendance, as was I. The primary purposes of the convention are:
- Communication of MUCC’s annual report including recent accomplishments and future goals.
- Election of officers for the coming year.
- Debate and voting on resolutions (this is where things got especially interesting).
There was also a keynote address from Shannon Lott, Natural Resources Deputy, Michigan DNR and a dinner speech by Mike Avery, a well-known outdoors radio host.
In future newsletters, I intend to comment on current MUCC activities, regulatory issues, and especially, the topics on which you would like to receive updates regarding MUCC. So, I ask you all, my fellow members: What’s my job? What are your questions or concerns? What should I write about? How can I best serve our club and you, my fellow club members? Please let me know what you’re thinking.
